The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) has launched a new award to open up career opportunities for global health researchers from the UK and low and middle incomes countries (LMICs).

The Global Advanced Fellowship award has been created to give opportunities to mid-career researchers. The move will enable post-doctoral researchers to develop leadership expertise and ultimately progress their careers.

  • Projects that primarily and directly benefit people LMICs
  • Tailored training and development programmes
  • LMIC institutional capacity strengthening

The scheme will open to those from health, public health, social care, and methodology career backgrounds.

People must be based in the UK or countries that qualify for official development assistance (overseas aid).

Andrew Stephenson comment

The new award was announced this week at the 2024 Prince Mahidol Award Conference in Thailand by the NIHR’s programme director for global health research, Professor Kara Hanson.

Prof Hanson said: “Our new Global Advanced Fellowship award fills an important gap in the career pathway for global health researchers.

“Alongside their research, award holders will develop their leadership skills and experience, and strengthen collaborations and professional networks. It provides a new opportunity for global health researchers from LMICs and the UK to advance their research careers.”

The award will open for applications in April 2024, with 10 awards available in the first round. More awards are expected to be available in future rounds.
