BMA urges politicians not to ‘play games’ with NHS after EU referendum
The chair of the British Medical Association (BMA) has said politicians must not “play games” with the health service following the vote for the UK to leave the European Union.
Dr Mark Porter said: “We urge politicians not to play games with the UK's health services as the country faces a new future.
“We stand together as one profession with our colleagues from Europe and across the world, with whom we live, work and study and on whom the NHS depends."
In response to Friday’s referendum result, Stephen Dalton, the interim chief executive of the NHS Confederation, said that the NHS has “broadly benefitted” from EU membership and a strong agreement will be needed with the EU to protect health services.
Stephen Dorrell, the chair of the NHS Confederation, stated his opposition to Britain leaving the EU at the NHS Confederation conference.
Simon Stevens, chief executive of NHS England, warned before the referendum that NHS finances could suffer further if there is an economic downturn as a result of leaving the EU.
