Broadmoor redevelopment tenders submitted

Five companies have submitted tenders to become the main contractor for the Broadmoor hospital redevelopment, it has been announced.

The contract, worth about £150m, is to construct a new building within the existing hospital grounds to improve services, safety and the overall environment for patients and staff.

Redevelopment preparation work is almost complete, with a series of enabling works underway. The full business case is due to be considered by the DH, and if approved, the West London Mental Health NHS trust will name a successful bidder by May.

David Phillips, redevelopment programme manager, said: “Senior managers at the trust are now in the process of reviewing each application. During this exercise, we will be assessing the past experience and performance of each company, their ability to provide value for money for the NHS and what specific skills their organisation and employees can bring to such a large scale project.”

The new hospital will contain 234 beds, providing accommodation for 210 male patients and space for 24 flexible beds. Construction is expected to start in December 2013 and will begin to house patients from January 2017.
