Broadmoor redevelopment work starts
Work has now begun on Broadmoor hospital’s £242m redevelopment, the West London Mental Health NHS Trust has announced.
Led by Kier Construction, with LDA Design and Balfour Beatty, the work includes 10 new wards and accommodation for 210 patients, new gardens, recreation areas and extensive landscaping.
Enabling works, including the main access road to the site, have now been complete.
The project received planning permission in 2012. Broadmoor was originally built in 1863 and is one of three secure hospitals in England.
Mike Foster, project director at LDA Design, said: “It is great news that the main redevelopment has officially started. We are looking forward to continuing our work with West London Mental Health NHS Trust and the construction team over the next few years to deliver an exemplar environment at Broadmoor Hospital to support its excellent mental health care.”
David Phillips, redevelopment programme manager, said: "Achieving Department of Health full business case approval, then celebrating the cutting of the sod ceremony just one month later on a build of this scale, shows what an important project this is and just how well the trust and its partners operate together. I'm looking forward to continuing this relationship with LDA Design and making sure we deliver the benefits and type of environment our patients and staff really need and deserve.”
