New Greater Manchester partnership to deliver latest healthcare technology to the region

A new partnership aiming to ensure Greater Manchester benefits from the accelerated introduction of the latest healthcare technologies has been announced.

The partnership brings together the Association of British HealthTech Industries (ABHI), Health Innovation Manchester and Greater Manchester health and care providers and funders (the GMHSP), together called the Greater Manchester Health Technologies Group.

The partnership will work to speed up the delivery of health technologies capable of earlier diagnosis, more effective treatments, and care services provided in the home rather than in hospitals.

The group will work by providing guidance to industry partners on Greater Manchester’s health and care priorities and seek out the best examples of technology innovators to support its delivery.

In a statement, the group said that it was driving to transform the region’s health and wants to partner Greater Manchester with the health technology industry to “create a world-leading site for developing the treatments of the future.”

Professor Ben Bridgewater, chief executive of Health Innovation Manchester, said: “HealthTech enables new approaches to the maintenance of wellness and the treatment of disease that allows commissioners, providers, and consumers alike to derive benefits.

“With its devolved health and social care system and emerging digital infrastructure, Greater Manchester is uniquely placed to work collaboratively with health technology pioneers to deploy proven innovation system-wide and at pace, realising benefits sooner.”

He said the agreement represents a landmark for the region which will ensure the best possible outcomes from health technology and secure the best value from current and future investments.

A number of proposals with the potential to improve people’s healthcare are currently being discussed, and some projects are already underway which will become formalised under the partnership.

The chief executive of the ABHI, Peter Ellingworth, said: “Health Innovation Manchester has a critical role in accelerating the adoption of HealthTech to enable the local population to get the best and most efficient healthcare possible.

“This partnership will connect medical device companies, diagnostic manufactures, and digitally-enabled technologies, across the region, so that evidence can be generated, and adoption is scaled at speed.

“We very much look forward to working together, as outlined in this MOU, both domestically and internationally.”
