Cancer patients in North Wales will benefit from faster, more precise treatment as Ysbyty Glan Clwyd (Glan Clwyd Hospital) receives two state-of-the-art linear accelerators (Linacs), thanks to a £9.49 million investment from the Welsh Government.
The new machines, installed at the North Wales Cancer Treatment Centre, will replace ageing equipment and significantly improve the delivery of radiotherapy. The latest Linac technology allows clinicians to target tumours with greater accuracy, reducing the risk of damage to surrounding healthy tissue and improving patient outcomes.
The upgraded machines are not only more precise but also more efficient. They operate faster than older models, meaning more patients can be treated each week. Their improved reliability will also help reduce delays caused by equipment breakdowns — a key step in ensuring timely cancer care.
Jeremy Miles, Welsh Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care, commented:
“This new, state-of-the-art equipment will provide more precise and faster treatment for people with cancer, improving access to radiotherapy services and cutting waiting times.
“It is another example of the Welsh Government’s commitment to improving outcomes for people and follows similar investments in new equipment in Wales’ other cancer centres.”

The new Linacs are part of a broader commitment by the Welsh Government to modernise cancer services and reduce waiting times. Only a few weeks ago, it was announced that £120 million would be committed to reducing waiting times with plans to reduce the overall waiting list size by 200,000, eliminating all waits that are two years in length, and restoring the diagnostic wait times to less than eight weeks by March next year.
