International search for new CEO launched

Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust has confirmed that it has begun the process of recruiting a successor to its outgoing Chief Executive Officer.

The current CEO, Professor Ian Abbs, has led the Trust with distinction and compassion since August 2019, and has confirmed his intention to step down from his role as CEO later this year. Professor Abbs will continue to serve as CEO until a successor is appointed, ensuring a smooth transition. The exact timing of his departure will depend on the appointment process and the notice period of his successor.

Under Professor Abbs' leadership, Guy’s and St Thomas’ has achieved several significant milestones. Notably, the Trust successfully merged with Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust in February 2021. Additionally, in collaboration with King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Guy’s and St Thomas’ delivered the largest global go-live of the Epic electronic health record system in October 2023.

Commenting on Professor Abbs’ decision to step down, Trust Chairman Charles Alexander said:

“Professor Abbs is a highly regarded and distinguished leader of this hugely important Trust, and will remain so until the conclusion of the succession process.

On behalf of the Board I want to express our enormous thanks to Ian for his continued leadership, and for supporting the Board to enable a smooth and well managed transition as we seek a future leader of equal calibre to lead this great organisation.

“Those who know Ian will recognise that his determination and ambition are always matched by his commitment to deliver the best possible care to all our patients and his compassionate support for almost 24,000 colleagues across our 5 hospital sites and in our community services.”

Professor Abbs is widely recognised for his passionate support for healthcare research, innovation, and life sciences. His efforts have not only benefited patients but also contributed to the wider UK economy.

The Board of Directors has also outlined that it is committed to finding a leader who will continue to build on Professor Abbs' legacy and drive the Trust forward in its mission to provide exceptional healthcare services.
