London is set to see a new school of medicine welcome its first students within the next few years, following recent confirmations from the General Medical Council (GMC).
St Mary’s University, London (SMU) will launch its new medicinal offering at its Strawberry Hill Campus in Twickenham by late 2026 – the university will initially be focusing on international students.
Nationwide partnership
Ahead of the launch, SMU has signed a new curriculum partnership with the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan), meaning the former will use the latter’s bachelor medicine bachelor surgery curriculum.
UCLan will also be SMU’s contingency partner through the GMC’s accreditation process.
“The school will not only contribute to the workforce development demands in the UK for more doctors and medical professionals, but it will also train global professionals able to work anywhere in the world,” said SMU’s vice-chancellor, Professor Anthony McClaran.
“Our approach to developing the whole person during students’ time at SMU will mean medics of the future will leave this University with the technical and personal skills they need to deliver truly holistic, compassionate, patient-centred care.”
Next steps
SMU is working towards its final timetable for the GMC as it approaches the next stage of the school’s development.
Future students will benefit from:
- Innovative technology
- New facilities
- Advanced teaching practices
Professor Michael Bewick, interim founding dean at the school, added: "Complemented by the existing successful Allied Health and Sports Science provision, St Mary’s is the natural place to establish a forward-thinking centre of medical training.”
