NHE365: Tackling workforce retention to improve patient care

On the 7th of April, National Health Executive hosted NHE365 NHS Workforce virtual event.

This event brought together hundreds of NHS leaders, influencers, and decision makers to cover the most important issues that influence the delivery of healthcare services.

The second panel discussion focused on workforce retention. Which within the healthcare sector is becoming increasingly tougher and according to the data presented by NHS Digital, in July 2021, 556,000 full days were lost due to workforce mental health difficulties.

So, how do we address this issue: to boost retention, fill vacancies, and improve patient care quality?

To answer this question, we were joined by Professor Carol Woodhams, Professor of Human Resource Management, University of Surrey; Wendy Preston, Head of Nursing Practice, Royal College of Nursing and Dr Wen Wang, Associate Professor in Human Resource Management, Data Analytics and Interpretation, University of Leicester.

During this discussion our panellists explored and shared ideas around how best to help NHS staff to help improve retention, recruitment, and patient care across the health sector, with Wendy adding: “Unfortunately there is no one magic answer, as we know we need at least 50,000 vacancies filled across the UK.”
