Management changes at Calderstones FT after failures

Specialist NHS learning disability centres in Lancashire have agreed to a number of clinical and managerial changes proposed by Monitor to improve the quality of care provided.

Calderstones Partnership NHS Foundation Trust was suspected of breaching its licence when a patient was abused in its care. Monitor investigated the case earlier this year and found that the instance was indicative of wider problems with the way the trust is run.

The trust will now ensure patients have weekly reviews with their case manager to ensure more regular feedback on care, as well as ensuring external professional support is available for all service users.

Robert Davidson, regional director at Monitor said: “Our investigation highlighted concern about how this foundation trust was run. We have therefore asked it to implement a number of remedial actions, including ensuring that in future each service user has a weekly face-to-face meeting with their case manager.

“Patients at Calderstones will expect these improvements to be made swiftly and we will consider further enforcement action if sufficient progress is not made.”
