Special measures trusts delivering ‘real improvements’

There has been “significant” progress in turning around the hospitals that have been placed in special measures, Monitor and NHS Trust Development Authority have found.

The progress report shows the work that has been done on 244 special measures actions at the 14 trusts with unusually high mortality rates. So far, 82 of these actions have been delivered and 127 are on track for completion within the expected timescale.

This includes the appointment of hundreds more staff to meet concerns around staffing levels at the trusts in special measures.

Monitor and the NHS Trust Development Authority are holding trusts to account for actions that are not yet being achieved.

Dr David Bennett, chief executive of Monitor said: “Although there is still a way to go, trusts in special measures are using the additional support we’re giving them to deliver real improvements for patients.

“The challenge now is to see this process completed so that these hospitals are consistently delivering good care.”

David Flory CBE, chief executive of the NHS Trust Development Authority said: “Today’s report shows the substantial progress that has been made in each of the NHS trusts that have been placed in special measures and I want to thank the NHS staff.  There is clearly also much more support that we need to provide as they work towards delivering further sustainable improvements for patients.”
