Summer events require 30% more blood for NHS
The NHS needs blood stocks to be 30% above usual levels to meet the demand of this summer’s events, including the Queen’s Jubilee and the Olympic Games.
Evidence suggests that regular donors miss appointments more often when large public events take place, as normal routines are disrupted. The extra blood will be needed for the huge number of visitors, which could place pressure on certain blood groups that are more common in other countries.
To achieve a larger supply, the NHS is creating additional appointments and extending some facility opening hours to offer greater flexibility.
Jon Latham, spokesman for NHS Blood and Transplant, told Sky News: “We have got a lot of evidence that during sporting events the collection of blood is harder.
“People get distracted doing other things and don't make their appointments. We want to collect blood before the Olympics so during that period people can just enjoy the Games.
“This year we have a unique situation and need the public's help to counterbalance the inevitable dip in donations as people celebrate a memorable summer for the country. We need to adjust the mix of stocks so we are well prepared as a responsible host for these exciting events.”
