Former inadequate West Midlands maternity unit upgraded by CQC
Walsall Manor Hospital’s maternity services have been given an improved rating from the health inspectorate following assessments made in June.
The trust had previously been rated as inadequate due to concerns over staffing levels and its monitoring of cardiotocography but has now been deemed worthy of needs improvement status.
In a report published on Wednesday the CQC praised staff for their “compassionate and supportive care.” The report also stated that midwifery staffing levels had significantly improved since the last inspection.
Inspectors said: “Staff were motivated and engaged with driving improvement for the service. Senior staff were now actively accepting and addressing the problems identified.
“There had been a significant shift in the attitude of consultants who were reacting well to the changes required. Leaders monitored improvements via a robust maternity improvement plan, which everyone understood.”
The report also commended the trust’s transitional care service for being “an innovative and dedicated approach to postnatal care,” and noted that the service had been nominated for an award in the area.
The CQC did raise concerns over effective management of infection control risks, as well as suggesting that further leadership improvements were required to drive improvement in a timely way.
On the whole, however, the department was recognized as a “calmer, more supportive environment” by inspectors.
Richard Beeken, chief executive of Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust said: “Our staff should be really proud of themselves for the way they have responded to last year’s disappointing rating and given the CQC greater confidence in our maternity services.”
He added: “We’re realistic about the work that we still need to do but this report shows we are making significant progress.”
Nicola Wenlock, Divisional Director of Midwifery, Gynaecology and Sexual Health, said last year's rating was for staff and users of the maternity services was “very disappointing,” but added: “we were determined to turn things around and reassure women and their families that they could depend on us for the safe, high quality care they deserve and expect.
“I would personally like to thank staff for everything they have done to achieve this fantastic improvement. Here’s to maternity services continuing to improve.”
