Mental inpatient service opens in Birmingham

The Malvern Unit at Brooklands in Birmingham is to accept its first patients as an inpatient mental health service. The £1.1m refurbishment is a 15-bed unit for male patients as part of the Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust.

The service will provide assessment and treatment in a safe environment for patients with a learning disability or mental health condition.

The unit includes ensuite facilities, walk-in shower units, visitor and recreation areas and an outdoor gym.

Mark Baxter, consultant psychiatrist at Brooklands, explained: “The patients to be treated here are currently in a range of specialist care services across the Midlands and beyond.

“In the main they are people with complex mental health conditions who are originally from the areas we serve, Coventry, Warwickshire and Solihull. We hope to provide a service for them that is closer to their friends, family and other services that can support them now and in the future.”

Rachel Newson, chief executive, said: “It is great to see such tangible evidence of our desire to put patients at the heart of the care we provide. This is a really exciting day for our services as this tremendous development has been designed especially to meet the needs of the people we serve.”
