Trust boss confirmed as new NHS Improvement CEO
NHS Improvement (NHSI) has today announced Ian Dalton as the replacement for outgoing CEO Jim Mackey.
Dalton, currently chief executive at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust in London, will take over the role on 4 December.
He previously worked as chief operating officer and deputy chief executive for NHS England between 2012 and 2013 before moving to BT Global Services as president of global and government health.
Mackey has been in charge at NHSI since 2015 after leaving his chief executive role at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, a role he now plans to return to.
Responding to the announcement, the new CEO commented: “The NHS is one of the best healthcare systems in the world and delivers excellent outcomes for millions of patients.
“However, these are challenging times for the NHS and I want to play a full role in helping providers across the country respond effectively for the benefit of patients and local communities. I bring much valuable insight with me from Imperial College Healthcare as well as from my time leading a range of other NHS organisations.
“NHS staff are incredibly committed and hard-working and I am looking forward to ensuring we at NHS Improvement do all we can to support them to deliver sustainable high-quality care to their patients.”
Chris Hopson, chief executive of NHS Providers, said his organisation welcomed Dalton to the role.
“Ian has a good understanding of the pressures and challenges trusts face and what support they will need to succeed in a difficult strategic context where demand is growing rapidly, finances are heavily constrained and there are widespread workforce shortages,” he explained, before adding thanks to the outgoing Mackey.
“Ian takes over from Jim Mackey who has shown commitment, judgement and skill in setting up NHSI and ensuring the provider sector has recovered and stabilised provider finances. We wish him well as he returns to Northumbria Healthcare and thank him for the huge contribution he’s made over the last two years.
“We look forward to working in close partnership with Ian Dalton and are confident that, under his and Dido Harding’s leadership, NHSI will provide the support and oversight the sector needs.”
Baroness Harding, new chair of NHSI, said: “I am delighted that Ian will be joining us as our new chief executive.
“Ian brings with him considerable experience at provider, regional and national levels in the NHS. His focus will be to develop NHS Improvement further so we can continue to improve how we support NHS providers and local systems to deliver the best possible care for patients.
“I would like to take the opportunity to thank Jim Mackey for the enormous and invaluable contribution he has made in his two years at NHS Improvement. He has been an outstanding leader and I wish him the very best for his return to Northumbria Healthcare.”
