Appointment reminder system launched in Scotland

Patients in Scotland are to be contacted ahead of their hospital appointments, in an effort to reduce the number of people who miss their slots.

The service will be run by NHS 24 and patients will be contacted around eight days before their appointment. It is expected to reduce the number of missed appointments from one in four to one in six.

A trial of the scheme in Fife and theHighlandshas led to a 27% reduction in missed appointments.

Health secretary Nicola Sturgeon said: “It is every patient’s responsibility to keep their appointments, but we also recognise that the NHS has a role to play in helping to make appointments convenient for patients.

“The reminders have already achieved great results and with more Health Boards set to trial them we can hope to see a better service for patients and a reduction in NHS time wasted.”

In the future the scheme is expected to be expanded to include automated phone messages or reminders via text.

I think it’s a great service and grateful for it but have one major complaint or issue about it!!! It calls me at 7pm and again about an hour later if I miss the call! This is a bad time to ring and we should have a choice what time it calls as my baby daughter has just got to sleep and suddenly my landline ringing! Always wakes her and annoys me a lot! Why can’t it call in the morning or earlier or if it must call later in day why not like 5pm ! NHS and my records they should know I have a baby! Really wish it would alter the time or give me option to opt out if it can’t call at a better time. Looking forward to when it can do texts instead. Very upsetting having to start over getting my crying baby to sleep due to the reminder and I can’t just silence my phone every night In anticipation of it. My mum ill so my volume must be on incase if emergency anyway. Tried to silence it last time and stupid answer machine then spoke on speaker grr so doesn’t work anyway. Also why does it call my landline instead of my mobile for example? Mobile is nearer to hand and easier to quickly silence to acknowledge call. Love the reminder just hate the time it does it!!!
