Lies, damn lies and statistics
Jeremy Hunt has yet again demonstrated how statistics are the biggest lie of all. It has been revealed that the 82% success rate of a pre-GP training scheme pilot he heralded as justification to roll out the scheme nationwide was based on just 14 successful participants.
That’s all it takes now, 14 people. That is 82% of the 17 people who took up one of the 46 ‘pre-GP’ roles in the East Midlands.
These 14 went on to be successful in entering GP training this year, which Hunt said was an example of “the better experience” of GP training being promoted.
The figures, from Health Education England and revealed by Pulse, signify “success” according to the health secretary.
One wonders what the 63% of unfilled places on the scheme signify to our statistic-happy ministers at the Department of Health.
