Award-Winning Care: The NHS Trust Transforming Patient Safety

North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust (NTHFT) has taken home the coveted ‘Demonstrating an Impact upon Patient Safety’ award at this year’s Bright Ideas in Health Awards, held in Newcastle on Thursday, 21st November.

Delivered annually, the Awards shine the spotlight on the achievements of healthcare innovators and researchers working to address improvements to service delivery through technology or new ways of working.

The accolade recognises the team’s positive impact on patient safety using asset-tracking and data-recording technology, CareScan, in clinical areas including operating theatres, endoscopy, and cardiology.

CareScan, a pioneering system developed by NTHFT, uses barcode scanning technology to ensure the safe and accurate tracking of surgical equipment and implants. It provides alerts for expired or recalled products, with real-time connection to the National Joint Registry (NJR) offering decision support to prevent serious patient safety incidents. In turn, since its implementation at NTHFT in 2020, 4,000 hours have been redirected into patient care.

Winning this award is a monumental achievement, affirming NTHFT’s commitment to innovation and patient safety. It also highlights a future where cutting-edge solutions like CareScan lead the way in creating safer, more efficient healthcare systems across the NHS as they face increased pressures on time and budget.

Matt Wright, CEO, CareScan, commented:

"A huge congratulations to the team at North Tees for their well-deserved recognition at the Bright Ideas in Health Awards. It is inspiring to see how the CareScan software is making a meaningful difference for staff and patients alike.

“CareScan’s core mission is to enhance patient safety, and this recognition truly highlights its impact. The NTHFT team’s successful adoption of the solution underscores their commitment to delivering the highest standards of care. We are excited to see how other Trusts can follow in their footsteps.”

Trusts are encouraged to visit North Tees and view CareScan in action, in order to see the benefits first hand and understand how it could be advantageous to their patients and workflows. Visit www.carescan.com to contact the team for more information, or to book a site visit.
