Investment delivering major ambulance improvements

Emergency response across Wales is set to be transformed with the rollout of over 140 state-of-the-art ambulances and support vehicles, thanks to a £22.45 million investment by the Welsh Government.

This significant funding marks the first phase of a five-year fleet strategy by the Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust, aimed at modernising emergency response and patient transport across the country. The initiative will replace ageing vehicles with cutting-edge ambulances equipped with the latest technology, materials, and safety features.

The strategy, which runs until 2030, places a strong emphasis on sustainability. Electric and hybrid vehicles will be prioritised wherever feasible, aligning with Wales’ commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting environmentally responsible healthcare services.

The investment also extends to the Non-emergency Patient Transport Service, which plays a vital role in helping patients attend hospital appointments and facilitating inter-hospital transfers.

Jeremy Miles, Welsh Health Secretary, said:

“This investment shows our commitment to ensuring the Welsh Ambulance Service has the modern, reliable fleet it needs to deliver exceptional care for people across Wales.

“The ambulance service plays a critical role not just in emergency response, but also supporting patient flow through the wider healthcare system.

“By replacing 142 vehicles, we're improving the resilience of our emergency response capabilities and supporting our environmental goals.”

Coinciding with the fleet upgrade, the Welsh Ambulance Service will introduce new protocols in July to improve response to the most critical 999 calls. These changes are designed to enhance survival rates and outcomes for patients experiencing cardiac arrests, serious illnesses, or traumatic incidents.

With 142 new vehicles hitting the roads, this investment represents a major step forward in emergency healthcare delivery. The Welsh Government’s commitment to innovation and sustainability is expected to set a benchmark for ambulance services across the UK.
