The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) has announced the latest in its series of annual capital investment calls, offering up to £60 million for NHS organisations in England.
Funded in partnership with the pharmaceutical industry's Voluntary Scheme for Branded Medicines Pricing, Access and Growth (VPAG) Investment Programme, this call aims to enhance the NHS's capability to conduct innovative research.
The allocated funds will cover cutting-edge equipment, associated building refurbishments, and modular buildings. The investment is designed to bolster NHS organisations' ability to meet industry needs and enhance the UK's reputation for delivering world-class commercial research.
Professor Lucy Chappell, CEO of the NIHR, said:
“This funding will enable NHS and primary care organisations to improve their ability to deliver high-quality research that will benefit patients and the public. It reinforces the UK’s position as one of the best places in the world to run commercial research, and will encourage further investment that will drive economic growth and shape the future of health and care in this country"

This call prioritises commercial research and primary care, encouraging applicants to propose innovative solutions to improve access to research and increase recruitment across all communities in England. Notably, £10 million has been ring-fenced for primary care organisations, marking a significant step towards supporting growth in research capacity outside hospital settings.
Eligible applicants include NHS Trusts, Primary Care Networks, Integrated Care Boards, GP Practices, GP Federations, Community Interest Companies, and other relevant entities involved in NHS care provision. For the first time, NHS-commissioned primary care providers, such as community pharmacies, optometry practices, and dental practices, are also eligible to apply.
Funding will be awarded over a period of up to 29 months, starting on 1 November 2025, with all awarded funds to be spent by 31 March 2028.
This investment aligns with the Government's Growth and Health Mission, pushing treatment, care, and research from hospitals into the community. By equipping NHS organisations with the necessary resources, NIHR aims to support a balanced portfolio of both commercial and non-commercial research, ultimately enhancing the UK's healthcare landscape.
