Trust pioneers voice recognition technology to enhance surgical patient safety

Surgical teams at Stockport NHS Foundation Trust are leading the way in patient safety innovation after becoming the first NHS trust in the UK to pilot a groundbreaking voice recognition system in a surgical setting. The new Voice-Care technology is designed to improve compliance with critical safety procedures, reduce the risk of human error and streamline operating theatre workflows.

The hands-free digital platform enables surgical teams to complete essential safety checks through spoken commands, removing the need for manual paperwork while supporting full compliance with World Health Organisation Surgical Safety Checklist standards.

Operating theatres are fast-paced environments where distractions can occur. Voice-Care acts as a digital co-pilot for clinical teams, guiding staff through key safety protocols and ensuring crucial steps are not missed. By automating documentation, the system also reduces administrative burden and allows clinicians to focus more of their time on delivering patient care.

The pilot is expected to strengthen the delivery of the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist across multidisciplinary teams, helping to reduce the likelihood of intraoperative “Never Events” and further improving patient outcomes. The technology also provides a more efficient method for recording safety checks, creating a streamlined and consistent documentation process.

Speaking about the introduction of the technology, Dr Nigel Roberts, Associate Divisional Director for Theatres, Critical Care and Anaesthetics at Stockport NHS Foundation Trust, said:

“It’s very exciting to be the very first NHS surgical team in the country to use this system. We see this new technology as a real game-changer, and we’re confident it will have a hugely positive effect on ensuring the best possible surgical safety standards in our surgical theatres.”

The initiative reflects a growing focus across the NHS on using digital technology and artificial intelligence-enabled solutions to enhance patient safety, improve efficiency and support frontline staff. As the first trust in the country to implement Voice-Care in a surgical environment, Stockport NHS will be closely watched as other organisations assess the potential benefits of similar systems.
