The next stage of NHS Cambridge’s new estate programme has been reached as local health leaders appoint a construction director to lead on its two new hospital designs.
Matt Allen, who has more than 30 years of experience in the building industry, will work on the incoming Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital and Cambridge Children’s Hospital.
This follows Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust submitting the second stage of its children’s hospital’s business case earlier this year.
Allen previously led on the construction of the University of Cambridge’s £300m Cavendish III physics laboratory and has also spearheaded works for airports and local authorities in the past.
NHS Cambridge is expecting to appoint a preferred construction partner for its cancer research hospital while the children’s hospital’s – which will be the first in the entire region – outline business case review is scheduled for September.
“I am thrilled to be joining Cambridge University Hospitals to lead the construction of two world-leading hospitals that will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the future of healthcare and for patients across the region and the UK,” said Allen on his appointment.
“The team and partner organisations involved have an impressive reputation and have done very well to progress these major projects through the initial design phases. I am now looking forward to working with the highly skilled teams to deliver a building that lives up to the vision."
