Teenager taking part in health research

Record number of under-16s share positive feedback on research participation

According to a survey from the National Institute for Health and Care Research, more children and young people are sharing their insights into research experience.

The findings from the survey show that 92% of young participants felt their involvement was valued by research staff, reflecting growing efforts to make research more inclusive and accessible.

Following feedback in 2021/22 that study information was often too complex, research teams have worked to improve clarity. This year, 76% of young participants said they were kept updated throughout their study, and 80% knew how to access the results.

As a result, 87% said they would be happy to take part in research again, highlighting the success of efforts to improve the research experience for children and young people.

The survey also found that 91% of adults would be happy to participate in research again, with 94% feeling well informed at the start and 93% feeling valued. Participants praised research teams for their care and communication.

National Head of Public Partnerships at the NIHR RDNCC, Angela Polanco, commented:

“It is great to see that children and young people’s voices are more prominent in the feedback. Their input is crucial in helping study teams to tailor their offer so that it encourages lasting involvement in research.”

“Of course there is always scope for improvement and I hope the findings from the latest PRES survey will help all of us across the health and care research system to become even more focused on the needs of our patients and participants.”

Now in its tenth year, PRES provides valuable insights to help study teams improve accessibility, inclusion, and volunteer retention. Respondents included participants in studies on cancer, mental health, and cardiovascular conditions.

Online survey completion rose to 54%, up from 51% last year, reflecting a shift towards digital engagement and easier access for participants.

The NIHR’s findings demonstrate the importance of listening to participants, especially younger voices, to shape a more inclusive and effective research environment.
