100th implant milestone reached for groundbreaking sleep apnoea device

A pioneering implantable treatment for obstructive sleep apnoea has reached a significant milestone in the UK, with the 100th procedure successfully performed at Trafford General Hospital.

Developed by Inspire Medical Systems, the implant offers a new treatment pathway for patients with moderate-to-severe OSA who have been unable to tolerate continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy, the long-established standard of care.

The device, often compared to a pacemaker because it works inside the body, is implanted during a minimally invasive procedure and synchronises with a patient’s breathing while they sleep. Controlled using a handheld remote, it is activated at bedtime and switched off in the morning, eliminating the need for masks or bedside equipment.

Consultants at Trafford General Hospital have welcomed the landmark achievement, highlighting the growing importance of personalised treatment options for a condition that affects millions across the UK.

Sadie Khwaja and Sean Loughran, Consultant ENT Surgeons at Trafford General Hospital who carried out the milestone procedure, said:

“This milestone marks an important step forward in how we treat obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) in the UK. OSA can have a substantial impact on health and quality of life, so it is important that patients are assessed and offered the most appropriate treatment approach for their individual needs. As awareness of OSA grows, it is encouraging to see increasing access to specialist services and a broader range of treatment pathways for eligible patients.”

Approximately the length of two 50 pence coins, the device is designed to gently stimulate the nerve responsible for tongue movement. By supporting the tongue and airway muscles during sleep, it helps prevent airway obstruction, one of the primary causes of OSA.

Once implanted, the system continuously monitors breathing patterns and delivers mild stimulation in sync with respiration, helping to keep the airway open throughout the night.

Patients operate the device themselves using a handheld remote, offering a discreet alternative to traditional sleep apnoea treatments.

Obstructive sleep apnoea is one of the most common sleep disorders in the UK. The condition occurs when the airway repeatedly collapses during sleep, leading to disrupted breathing, poor sleep quality and excessive daytime fatigue.

If left untreated, OSA can significantly increase the risk of serious health complications, including:

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Stroke
  • Heart failure
  • High blood pressure
  • Reduced life expectancy

While CPAP therapy remains the frontline treatment for many patients, adherence continues to be a major challenge. Research has shown that just under half of patients discontinue CPAP treatment within three years, creating demand for alternative therapies that improve patient compliance and outcomes.

The Inspire implant is now available through a growing number of NHS centres across England, with access expected to continue expanding as awareness and clinical adoption increase.

For eligible patients, the treatment is funded by the NHS, although some individuals may choose private self-funded treatment.

With OSA estimated to affect nearly one in four adults aged between 30 and 69 in the UK, healthcare leaders believe innovative therapies such as implantable neurostimulation could play an increasingly important role in meeting growing patient demand while improving quality of life and long-term health outcomes.
