Christine McLaughlin CBE has been appointed as the Scottish Government’s new Director General for Health and Social Care and Chief Executive of NHS Scotland, taking on one of the most influential leadership roles in Scottish healthcare at a crucial time for service reform.
The appointment comes as NHS Scotland embarks on an extensive programme of transformation aimed at improving patient outcomes, boosting operational performance and securing the long-term sustainability of health and care services across the country.
McLaughlin brings significant experience to the position, having most recently served as Chief Operating Officer and Deputy Chief Executive of NHS Scotland. Throughout her career, she has held several senior director roles within the Scottish Government and has played a key part in the development and delivery of public sector reform initiatives.
Her healthcare career began as a management trainee within NHS Scotland before moving into management consultancy roles across the UK, where she led major public service transformation programmes. She joined the Scottish Government in 2010 and has since built a strong reputation for driving change across complex organisations and systems.
The Scottish Government has outlined ambitious plans to modernise health and social care services, with a focus on reducing inefficiencies, improving consistency of care and breaking down organisational barriers that can impact patient experience.

Speaking following her appointment, McLaughlin said she was honoured to take on the role at a time of significant change for Scotland’s health and care system.

With extensive experience across both government and healthcare leadership, McLaughlin is expected to play a pivotal role in steering NHS Scotland through the next phase of reform while ensuring services remain focused on delivering high-quality care for patients and communities throughout Scotland.
