International collaboration strengthening children’s cancer care

Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust has welcomed a senior delegation from Peru as part of an international visit aimed at strengthening collaboration and improving outcomes for children and young people with cancer.

The delegation included senior leaders from Peru’s National Cancer Institute (Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Neoplásicas – INEN), alongside representatives from the British Embassy in Lima.

The visit provided an opportunity for both organisations to exchange knowledge, explore best practice, and identify areas for future collaboration.

Delegates met with Alder Hey’s executive leadership team before taking part in a detailed programme designed to showcase the Trust’s approach to delivering high‑quality, patient‑centred care.

Both organisations share a common ambition to improve outcomes and experiences for children with cancer, while continuing to innovate in how services are designed and delivered.

During their time in Liverpool, the Peruvian delegation participated in a series of guided tours across Alder Hey’s specialist facilities.

This included:

  • A tour of the hospital’s infrastructure and patient‑focused design
  • A visit to the Alder Hey Innovation Hub, highlighting new technologies and service models
  • A deep dive into digital systems, data, and clinical technology
  • A visit to oncology services, showcasing how care is delivered to children and their families

The programme allowed delegates to see how innovation, environment and digital capability come together to support clinical care.

INEN plays a critical role in Peru’s healthcare system, delivering highly specialised cancer treatment for both adults and children.

Each year, around 1,900 children in Peru are diagnosed with cancer, with INEN providing care for a significant proportion of these patients.

The organisation is currently leading an ambitious programme to expand and enhance cancer services across the country, including:

  • Investment in new paediatric facilities
  • Development of advanced digital systems
  • Increased access to specialist cancer care

The visit to Alder Hey forms part of these efforts, providing insight into international models of care that could inform future development in Peru.

Rafael Guerrero, Director of Children’s Global Health at Alder Hey, said:

“We were delighted to welcome an international delegation from Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Neoplásicas (INEN), who are currently developing plans to build their own specialised paediatric oncology hospital in Peru. After seeing Alder Hey first-hand, their feedback was truly humbling, recognising that many of the things we do here are exactly what they aspire to achieve.

“It’s a proud moment for our teams and a reminder of the impact we can have beyond our own walls. We are extremely excited to continue this partnership and support them in creating something truly special.”
