Trish Bennett

Mersey Care names new CEO

Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust has officially welcomed Trish Bennett as the organisation's new CEO, after a short stint as CEO designate.

Bennett replaces Professor Joe Rafferty CBE who is stepping down following 12 years in the role of CEO.

The appointment follows a national recruitment process, which eventually landed on Bennett who has worked at Mersey Care since 2016, holding a number roles, including:

  • Deputy CEO
  • Chief nurse
  • Chief operating officer

Experience

Initially starting her health service career as a nurse, Bennett has risen through the ranks in the north west of England – across both provider settings and at NHS England.

During her time as chief nurse and chief operating officer, Bennett presided over around 200 sites including mental health, learning disabilities, and community services to name a few.

She was also the compliance lead for Care Quality Commission requirements as well as emergency preparedness resilience and response.

“I look forward to working with the talented staff at Mersey Care and our system partners to continue to improve health and ensure high quality care for all of our communities across the Cheshire and Merseyside region,” said Bennett.

Mersey Care

Employing 11,000 staff, Mersey Care provides community and mental health care to a population of more than 1.4 million people across Merseyside and areas of Lancashire and Cheshire.

The trust cemented its position as a trailblazer in mental health when it launched the first ever Mental Health Research for Innovation Centre (M-RIC) in partnership with the University of Liverpool last year.

The wider Liverpool area has recently seen more details of the Liverpool hospital group announced.

Today has seen Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Liverpool Women’s NHS Foundation Trust officially combine to create the NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group.

Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital, along with The Walton Centre and The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre are also set to join over the next few years.
