NHS Property Services publishes Corporate Social Responsibility update

NHS Property Services (NHSPS) has published its first update to its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, as part of continued efforts to improve the lives of patients and communities up and down the country.

Launched in 2018, the CSR strategy covers NHSPS’ commitment to acting responsibly and operating sustainably in order to help the NHS deliver the Long Term Plan.

The latest updates support key focus areas for the NHS: social prescribing, reducing carbon emissions, improving accessibility and managing waste.

Key highlights from the report include:

  • Creation of six social prescribing sites for patients and communities
  • Development of 324 online access guides for NHS sites in partnership with AccessAble, a not-for-profit providing accessibility information on airports, restaurants, public spaces and buildings
  • Offsetting over 830 tonnes of CO2 through LED replacements
  • £56,000 raised for the organisation's charity partner, with £89,000 raised for charity overall
  • 2,500 volunteer hours completed by employees

Martin Steele, Chief Executive Officer for NHS Property Services, said: “I am delighted with the progress we have made to improve the lives of patients and communities across the country. It is a testament to the enthusiasm, drive and passion of our colleagues across the business, and a true example of us living our values, pulling together as one team to support the Long Term Plan and enable excellent patient care.” 

Whilst good progress has been made, NHSPS is committed to doing more. As part of its role in helping the NHS to deliver on its Long Term Plan, the organisation is committed to creating healthy places for patients, colleagues, communities and the environment to thrive. 

Lucy Arnold, West Midlands Facilities Support Assistant at NHS Property Services, added: “We were contacted by one of the GPs at a local health centre who was looking to set up a community gardening group for patients who are suffering from mental illnesses. The GP wanted to use the group to improve their wellbeing by gardening and socialising together over a shared, common interest.

“Four of our colleagues volunteered to transform the internal courtyard into raised beds where patients can now grow their own seasonal produce. The space not only provides a chance for these patients to spend time together but is seen and enjoyed by all users of the health centre as they walk through the waiting room.”

NHSPS has outlined an ambitious programme of activities over the next year and intends provide another update in 2021 to ensure the organisation continues to deliver meaningful change for the NHS, employees and patients within the community.
