Child health leaders unite to drive innovation and improve outcomes for future generations

Leading researchers, clinicians, academics and innovation partners from across Yorkshire and the Humber gathered in Sheffield last week to explore how collaboration can help deliver healthier futures for children and young people.

Hosted at Sheffield Children’s state-of-the-art facility, The Spark, home to the National Centre for Child Health Technology, the South Yorkshire Research and Innovation Expo brought together organisations from across the region to showcase pioneering work in child health and develop new partnerships that can transform care.

Organised by Health Innovation Yorkshire, the event highlighted the strength of South Yorkshire’s growing child health ecosystem and its ambition to become a nationally recognised hub for innovation, research and technology-driven healthcare.

Ruth Brown, Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust Chief Executive, said:

“We know that poor health in childhood creates consequences that last a lifetime. The figures across our region and nationally make the scale of this challenge clear, with almost one in four children in South Yorkshire living in low-income families, where poverty directly harms long-term health.

“We can’t improve this by relying on old models of hospital care; we must be bold in bringing fresh research, creative ideas, and practical innovation to reimagine how we deliver care closer to home.

“While the scale of the challenge can seem daunting, we know we have the right ingredients in place across South Yorkshire to tackle it, with Sheffield Children’s and our partnerships at the heart.”

A key theme throughout the day was the importance of prevention, early intervention and shifting care closer to home. Delegates took part in panel discussions, presentations and networking sessions, while exhibition spaces showcased emerging research, digital technologies and innovative approaches designed to improve health outcomes for children and young people.

Guided tours of The Spark provided attendees with first-hand insight into how Sheffield Children’s is bringing together clinicians, researchers, technology specialists and industry partners to accelerate the development and adoption of new healthcare solutions.

The Expo demonstrated how cross-sector collaboration can speed up the translation of research into real-world healthcare improvements, helping ensure children receive the right support at the right time. It also highlighted opportunities for organisations to work together on future projects, strengthening South Yorkshire’s position as a centre of excellence for child health innovation.

The event comes as Sheffield Children’s marks its 150th anniversary, reflecting on a long history of adapting to meet the changing needs of children and families. Since opening in 1876, the Trust has consistently embraced innovation, and today continues to invest heavily in research, technology and collaborative partnerships to shape the future of paediatric healthcare.

Participants left with a shared vision of creating a healthier future for children and young people through innovation, research and partnership working. By fostering collaboration across healthcare, academia, industry and the voluntary sector, South Yorkshire is increasingly well positioned to develop and scale solutions that could benefit children not only across the UK but internationally.

As it celebrates a century and a half of care, Sheffield Children’s remains firmly focused on the future, working with partners to transform healthcare delivery, improve outcomes and give every child and young person the best possible start in life.
