Harrogate District Hospital is set to undergo a major transformation after plans for a significant redevelopment of its main entrance received approval from the Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust Board.
The ambitious project is designed to create a modern, welcoming and fully accessible entrance that will improve the experience of the thousands of patients, visitors and staff who use the hospital every day.
The redevelopment, being delivered in partnership with property development and investment company noviniti and One Retail, the retail division of Compass Group UK & Ireland, will introduce a refreshed environment that better reflects the high standards of care provided across the Trust.
Following planning approval in February 2026, construction work is scheduled to begin in early September 2026, with completion anticipated in spring 2027.
Throughout the redevelopment programme, the hospital's current main entrance will remain operational to ensure patients and visitors can continue to access services safely and conveniently. The Trust has confirmed it will work closely with its partners to minimise disruption, provide clear signage and maintain easy navigation around the hospital site.
Importantly, the scheme is being funded primarily through commercial investment, meaning there will be no reduction in funding for frontline care, patient services or staff budgets.
The redesigned entrance will deliver a range of improvements focused on accessibility, convenience and patient experience.
Plans include a more open and inviting arrival space, enhanced self-check-in and reception facilities, informal seating areas and a significant increase in toilet provision, including a dedicated Changing Places toilet.
New retail and refreshment options will also be introduced, featuring a Costa Coffee outlet and an M&S Food store. These additions aim to create a more comfortable and convenient environment for patients, visitors and hospital staff spending extended periods on site.
As part of the project, the hospital's Café Bistro, currently located within the main entrance, will close at the end of September. WHSmith closed in July as preparations for the redevelopment got underway. During construction, food and drink services will continue to be available from Herriots Restaurant on the first floor.
Sustainability will be a key element of the redevelopment, with environmental considerations built into the design to help reduce the hospital's carbon footprint and support the Trust's long-term commitment to greener healthcare delivery.
The project forms part of a broader vision to modernise key facilities while ensuring the hospital environment reflects the quality of care delivered throughout the organisation.
