Dr Buki Adeyemo, Chief Executive of North Staffordshire Combined Healthcare NHS Trust, has been appointed as the new Chair of the NHS Confederation’s Mental Health Network, succeeding Ifti Majid, who stepped down in April.
Dr Adeyemo brings over two decades of NHS experience and a distinguished background in psychiatry for older adults and adults. Originally from Nigeria, she joined the NHS in 1997 and has since become a respected leader in mental health services. Under her leadership, North Staffordshire Combined Healthcare NHS Trust has been rated ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).
Dr Adeyemo has served on the Mental Health Network advisory board for the past two years, representing NHS Chief Executives. Her appointment comes at a pivotal time for mental health services, with growing demand and a national focus on improving access, equity, and outcomes.
Commenting on her appointment, Dr Adeyemo said:
“I really value the work of the network and the support it gives to its members across the NHS, particularly during this time of change. I’m excited to step up into the chair role and have the opportunity to make the most of the unique position the network holds to influence policy, support shared learning and work with members to improve what we are able to deliver to people who experience mental illness and our communities.”

The Mental Health Network represents NHS and independent sector providers of mental health, learning disability, and autism services. It works with government, regulators, media, and the wider health system to influence policy and promote excellence in care.
Rebecca Gray, Director of the Mental Health Network, also commented:
“Buki has already made a great contribution to the direction of the network as a representative member on our board and we are delighted that she is now stepping up to take over the role as chair, and l look forward to working with her to take the network forward. We would also like to thank our outgoing chair, Ifti Majid, who led the board since 2019 and will be missed.”
Her leadership is expected to bring a renewed focus on diversity, innovation, and collaboration across the mental health landscape.
