Professor Ben Bridgewater has been appointed as the new Executive Chair of the Health Innovation Network, representing England’s 15 regional health innovation networks.
He will lead the Network’s mission to accelerate innovation, improve health outcomes, and drive economic growth across the NHS and life sciences sector.
Ben will continue in his role as Chief Executive of Health Innovation Manchester, while taking on national responsibilities to strengthen the Network’s influence and impact.
A former cardiac surgeon, Ben brings extensive experience in clinical leadership, digital transformation, and partnerships between the NHS and industry. Since 2018, he has led Health Innovation Manchester through a period of growth and transformation, delivering nationally recognised programmes such as:
- The Greater Manchester Care Record
- Pioneering work in obesity care
- Securing significant external investment for regional innovation
Professor Bridgewater commented on his appointment, saying:

The Health Innovation Network plays a vital role in spreading proven innovations across the NHS. In the past year alone, Network activity has benefited more than one million patients, leveraged £500 million in investment, and created or safeguarded over 900 jobs.
Ben’s appointment comes as the Network continues to support the government’s Life Sciences Sector Plan, helping position the NHS as a major customer for innovation and a driver of economic development.
The Executive Chair is selected every two years from among the 15 regional chief officers, ensuring leadership is rooted in local expertise with national reach.
