Plans to create a new modern main entrance at Royal Bolton Hospital have been submitted, marking a significant step towards improving the experience for patients, staff, and visitors.
If approved, the redevelopment will deliver a brighter, more accessible, and welcoming arrival space, designed to make navigating the hospital easier and less stressful.
The proposed development focuses on enhancing the first impression of the hospital, creating a more modern and user‑friendly entrance environment.
Key improvements would include:
- A spacious and clearly designed reception area
- Improved wayfinding and navigation
- Greater accessibility for all visitors
- A more comfortable and supportive environment
Hospital leaders say the changes are designed to ensure people feel more at ease when arriving, particularly during what can often be a difficult or stressful time.
As part of the plans, the new entrance will offer enhanced facilities and amenities, including a wider range of food and drink options.
These additions aim to:
- Provide greater convenience for patients and visitors
- Improve comfort during waiting times
- Support families and carers spending extended periods at the hospital
The goal is to create a space that is not only functional, but also more welcoming and accommodating.
Crucially, the redevelopment will be fully funded and delivered by an external partner, meaning there will be no impact on the Trust’s budget or financial position.
This approach allows the hospital to benefit from significant infrastructure improvements without placing additional financial pressure on NHS resources.
The project is being led by a specialist external partner with a strong track record of delivering high‑quality hospital entrance and retail environments across the UK.
The design will prioritise patient comfort and wellbeing, accessibility for individuals with different needs, and a seamless and supportive visitor journey. This ensures the development reflects both clinical requirements and user experience considerations.
To minimise disruption during building works, the Trust has confirmed that temporary entrance and drop‑off arrangements will be put in place.
Patients and visitors will be informed of changes in advance of appointments, as well as guided through clear on‑site signage and directions.
The project is being delivered in collaboration with iFM Bolton Ltd., with estates teams working closely with the external partner to ensure the development meets local needs. This partnership approach aims to ensure the final design reflects the expectations of local residents, patients and visitors, and staff working across the hospital.
Subject to planning approval, construction is expected to begin in summer 2026, with completion anticipated by spring 2027.
The phased approach will allow the hospital to remain fully operational while improvements are delivered.
The proposed redevelopment reflects a broader focus across the NHS on improving hospital environments, ensuring they support high‑quality care and positive patient experiences.
A modern entrance can play a key role in:
- Reducing anxiety for patients
- Improving navigation and efficiency
- Supporting overall wellbeing
Fiona McDonnell, Managing Director of Ifm Bolton Ltd – who provide the estate and facility services on behalf of the trust – said:
“This is an exciting proposal that has the potential to make a real difference to our patients, visitors, and staff. Arriving at hospital can be an anxious experience, and these plans are all about creating a more welcoming, accessible, and comfortable environment from the very start. By improving our entrance facilities and offering better amenities, we hope to make time spent at Royal Bolton Hospital as positive and supportive as possible for everyone who comes through our doors.”

The new entrance plans represent a significant investment in the future of Royal Bolton Hospital, enhancing both its facilities and its role as a key healthcare provider for the local community.
If approved, the redevelopment will provide a more welcoming, accessible, and patient‑focused environment – helping improve the experience for thousands of people who use the hospital every year.
