A flagship mental health facility in Walsall is celebrating its first anniversary, marking a year of transformative care for older adults across the Black Country.
The specialist unit, located at Dorothy Pattison Hospital, opened its doors in February 2025 as a cornerstone of a regional effort to modernise mental health services. Over the past 12 months, the facility has provided essential support to 98 patients, many of whom are living with dementia and complex mental health needs.
Recognising the unique challenges faced by those with cognitive impairment, the unit was built with "dementia-friendly" architecture at the forefront. The design prioritises safety and sensitivity, using environmental cues to reduce distress and promote independence.
Key features of the facility include:
- Therapeutic Outdoor Spaces: Spacious gardens designed to offer fresh air and a sense of calm.
- Energy-Efficient Infrastructure: A modern, sustainable design that aligns with the NHS's green initiatives.
- Staff Wellbeing Hubs: Dedicated areas for healthcare professionals to "rest and recharge," ensuring they can provide the highest level of compassionate care.
Beyond the clinical treatment, the unit has become a hub of social activity. Ward managers Lisa Knott and Jackie Moylan highlight that "moments of connection" are just as vital as medical intervention.
In its first year, the unit’s two wards have hosted a variety of patient-led events, including:
- Breakfast clubs and coffee mornings to encourage socialisation.
- Choirs and cookery groups to stimulate memory and motor skills.
- Garden activities to foster a peaceful, therapeutic atmosphere.
Divisional Director for Older Adults at Black Country Healthcare NHS FT, James Cole, commented:
“Reaching the first anniversary of this unit is an important milestone, not just for our teams in Walsall but for the Trust’s wider ambition to transform mental health care in the Black Country.
“This facility was designed around the needs of older adults, particularly those living with dementia, and the impact we’ve seen in just twelve months shows the value of investing in modern, therapeutic environments.
“As we continue to deliver on our strategic plans, we remain committed to creating spaces that promote dignity, independence and recovery, while supporting our staff to provide the very best care.”

The success of the Walsall unit is part of a broader transformation project led by the Black Country Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. This regional overhaul includes the recent refurbishment of Edward Street Hospital in West Bromwich.
